Active Aging Through Skills, Work, and Community Engagement

Old age is generally considered the final stage of human life. In many cases, it can be accompanied by challenges such as reduced physical strength, loneliness, disability, lack of family support, poverty, and financial hardship. In Iran, the retirement system is not fully structured around continued social participation, and many people may experience isolation after retirement because meaningful work or recreational activities are not clearly defined for them. This isolation can contribute to a range of psychological and physical health problems.

In response, we worked with neighborhood community centers to create opportunities for participation, engagement, and capacity-building among older adults.

These community centers are expected to respond to the diverse needs of local residents by providing accessible, high-quality spaces for cultural and social activities, reducing the need for people to travel long distances or spend significant amounts of money to access such services. Previously, various classes such as cooking and music had been offered in these centers, but participation had been limited.

At the same time, another practical issue was identified: providing meals for community center staff. We connected this operational need with the issue of social isolation among older adults and developed a solution that could address both challenges.

What We Did

  • A series of competitions was organized among older adults in neighborhood community centers across different areas of Tehran. These competitions covered activities such as cooking and sewing for older women, as well as skills such as cabinet-making and electronics for older men. The events received strong participation and encouraged older adults to become more active and engaged in their communities.
  • Following the competitions, interest in training courses increased significantly. Several rounds of classes were held in areas such as cooking, sewing, housekeeping, cabinet-making, chess, and table tennis.
  • The names of competition winners were published in the neighborhood centers' quarterly magazine, helping create motivation, recognition, and a healthy sense of competition among participants.
  • The issue of providing meals for community center staff was addressed through the cooking activities. In addition, food prepared at the centers was distributed to low-income residents in the same neighborhoods as a charitable initiative.
  • Competition winners were later invited to work as instructors in the community centers. This created a source of income for them while also strengthening their sense of usefulness, social participation, and self-worth.
